Message: I am doing family research on my Demyan Ancestors of Walston, Pennsylvania who were Coal Mines at the Walston Mines from about 1886-1916. I would like to know if you have any books that have photos of the types of coins, currency, or scrip that the Miners were paid in. If located, can you send copies on a pdf file? Thanks!!

The property that it was found on was once the general store for the miners. Once the store closed it's doors they converted it into a 5 bedroom 2 bath home. My parents bought the property in 2002. The original building ended up burning down. The land had never been searched or had metal detectors run across it. Me, my husband and my youngest brother searched a small area for about 2 hours and found this coin and a few more but they were from the 40s and 50s.

Need help identifying

I found this coin over two decades ago while in a camping trip. I can’t immediately recall what State I was in - either OH, WV, or KY.

The coin seems pretty corroded, so it’s difficult to determine what it is, but I suspect it is scrip. Does anyone have any ideas?

Looking at the photos I cannot see very much to help identify the token. Is there any sequence of letters that you could see that might complete a word?

KY2197 Pee Vee, Harlan Co., KY Findings

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share a few observations on a partial set of scrip from the C.E. Flanary store in Pee Vee, Kentucky. My first note is on the 25¢ piece. The piece I come across has "Merchandise Only" rather than the listed "Merchandise" on the reverse. [Edkins, 2197B25: "Good For/25/.In./Merchandise"]

This piece also measures to 24mm, rather than the listed 25mm B25. (I calibrated my calipers prior to measuring the pieces. Checked against 3 different rulers and an object of known size.)

Next, the listing B10. I have two of these, both have a period after "Merchandise" (.../Merchandise.). I noticed that Edkins Catalogue does not list a period after the "Merchandise". Measurements and other factors are the same as Edkins listing.

Finally, the prize! The last one is a C.E. Flanary Store 5¢ piece.

I have a few noticeable differences with this piece:

Thanks for sharing that! So the 5¢ pieces are the same as well? I felt that they varied so much from the listings in the catalogue that it merited a little research at least.

Billy

this is exactly what this website can be used for. My thinking is the books can be listed complete with use by members only. Membership dues will make more money for NSCA than profit from book sales and can be updated as needed. Also I think over time this is a great tool to get new members. Not only new collectors but commercial dealers pawn shops etc.

GREAT WORK.
