Burley Williams and I have been discussing Jewell Ridge back and forth over the last few months. But....not the Jewell Ridge Virginia mines, the Blair Fork mine in Kentucky. Burley tells me that this mine was located adjacent to the Leatherwood 2 mine of Blue Diamond. I know they used scrip because I have a scrip card from the mine. But no Kentucky scrip has popped up that I know of. I have heard stories that they used the same scrip as the Virginia operations. I don't know. The Blair Fork mine was started in the mid to late forties according to the Kentucky Mine Reports and mined into the sixties, right at the tail end of the scrip era. If they did share scrip, it would only make sense that it would be the VA 1449 F series (Orco No Date). That may be why there is so much of that type around.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Did anyone's grandpa work here? We need to add this to the Kentucky scrip listings when we can pin down the scrip.
