COLLECTING COAL SCRIP
Suppose you are Loretta Lynn. You were born in Butcher Holler in Johnson County, Kentucky and your daddy worked in the Van Lear coal mines. Well, you could collect the scrip from that mine in Van Lear–fourteen different pieces from the Consolidation Coal Company. Easy-peasy, a small collection.

If you wanted to collect all the scrip from Johnson County, a complete collection would amount to about sixty pieces.

Or to go in a different direction, you could collect all the scrip from Consolidation. They had seventy-two company stores and a complete collection of that scrip would be well over a thousand pieces.
Many collectors want scrip from their home county or state. Others are interested in collecting as many states as possible or from one particular company.
